2010 Running Back Rankings
If your team needs a feature back this is not the draft for you. There are a lot of possibilities in April but no definites. The top three prospects all have their ills while most of the second tier backs lack completion to their games. We see a several number two backs on this list and a bunch of very good situational players. (updated: 2/4/2010)
RankRndNameAnalysis
11-2Jonathan Dwyer
Georgia Tech
Hard running, north/south ball carrier with great vision and power. Breaks several tackles in the course of a single run, uses an effective straight-arm to keep runs alive and picks up a lot of yardage off initial contact. Lacks top speed but has enough skill to be a feature runner in the NFL.
21-2C.J. Spiller
Clemson
Elusive, creative ball carrier with great quickness. Makes several defenders miss in the course of a single carry and has a great burst. Great return specialist. Shows little to no toughness in his game and does too much east/west running. Not a feature runner at the next level but has potential as a specialist that can take hand-offs, catch the ball out of the backfield and return kicks or punts.
31-2Jahvid Best
California
Amazingly elusive ball carrier who creates his own yardage, making several defenders miss over the course of a single run. Fast, quick and turns in on in a single step. Dynamite receiver out of the backfield. Plays bigger than his listed size and has the makings of a feature runner. Concussions last season are a major concern.
42ndRyan Mathews
Fresno State
Well sized ball carrier with power, vision and speed. Shows enough skill to be a feature back at the next level. Set to enter the draft and could be a surprise pick in the top fifty selections.
52-3Toby Gerhart
Stanford
Powerful, straight ahead runner that picks up the tough yardage. Best between the tackles yet shows great vision, instincts as well as better than average footwork for such a big ball carrier.
62-3Joe McKnight
USC
Elusive ball carrier consistently creating his own yardage and making defenders miss. Plays with great balance, body control and turns it on in a single step. Effective receiver out of the backfield.
72-3Dexter McCluster
Mississippi
Elusive ball carrier who'll draw comparisons to former Rebel John Avery. Eludes defenders, creates yardage and a terrific receiver out of the backfield. Game breaking return specialist. Lacks any semblance of strength in his ball carrying and brought down rather easily.
83rdMontario Hardesty
Tennessee
Relatively quick footed back with the ability to make defenders miss in a small area. Has taken hold of the opportunity afforded him this season and really watching his game take off.
93rdCharles Scott
LSU
Powerful ball carrier who picks up a lot of yardage off initial contact and can carry the load between the tackles. Runs with an aggressive style, picks up the tough yardage and gives effort as a blocker
104thAnthony Dixon
Mississippi State
Powerful ball carrier who plays big and fast. Fluid changing direction, finds the hole then quickly gets through it. Solid pass catcher out of the backfield. Potential top 75 pick.
114thBen Tate
Auburn
Patient straight-line back with a burst. Displays the ability to pick up yardage off initial contact. Not elusive, struggles to gain yardage if the hole is not available and can be tentative in his running. Has ability and shows flashes but must put a complete game together.
124-5Chris Brown
Oklahoma
Quick footed runner who sidesteps defenders, runs low to the ground and has deceptive strength carrying the ball. Solid receiver out of the backfield. Underrated.
135-6Javarris James
Miami-Fl
One time highly rated ball carrier that has struggled with injury and inconsistency.
145-6Lonyae Miller
Fresno State
Offers great size/speed numbers. Doesn't get the ball much at FSU and could be a late bloomer and late round speed. At the very least a potential short yardage runner at the next level.
156thAndre Dixon
Connecticut
Well sized ball carrier who took strides last season yet still projects as a number two back in the NFL.
166thJoique Bell
Wayne State
Well sized ball carrier with a complete game. Underrated at this point. May not be a number one at the next level but can definitely be used in a rotational system.
176-7Patrick Paschall
North Dakota State
Smooth, elusive ball carrier who creates yardage. Solid pass catcher as well. Third down back/situational runner.
187thLeGarrette Blount
Oregon
Powerful, straight ahead runner that never met expectations. Anger management issues will keep him on the sidelines this season and push him into the late rounds of April's draft.
197thBrandon James
Florida
Nifty, elusive athlete that can line-up in the backfield, as a receiver in the slot or produce returning punts/kicks.
207thBrandon Minor
Michigan
Smart ball carrier with good vision and straight ahead power. Runs a bit tall and lacks both the speed and agility to turn the corner. Possible third running back on an NFL roster.
217thJames Starks
Buffalo
Nice sized back who plays big and smart. Sees the field, finds the running lanes and patiently follows blocks anywhere on the field. Lacks breakaway speed and top quickness, which will push him down draft boards. Sitting on the sidelines in '09 with a serious shoulder injury.
22FADarius Marshall
Marshall
Quick, elusive ball carrier with the ability to create his yardage. Lacks strength up the middle and not a feature back on the NFL level.

East Carolina
Elusive and creative ball handler with marginal physical skills but great vision and run instincts.

Well sized interior/short yardage back. Could move up draft boards with a big senior season.

Illinois
Strong interior runner who does a nice job catching the ball out of the backfield. Lacks the speed to turn the corner and not a ball carrier who creates yardage.
41FAJake Sharp
Kansas
Elusive ball carrier also effective as a receiver out of the backfield. More of a situational runner for the next level.
42FADamion Fletcher
Southern Mississippi
Quick, elusive runner with the ability to create his own yardage. Situational runner at the next level who must make his mark catching the ball out of the backfield and show some meddle as a return specialist.
